have that as well. and here's more about how it all came down from start to finish. these connecticut parents had dropped off their kids for a typical friday at school. then about 9:30 in the morning, they received robo calls and text messages. sandy hook elementary school was put on alert. >> i just got a message saying -- from the superintendent that there was -- there was an unconfirmed shooting and, you know, everybody is in lock down. >> i was a little scared. i felt sick to my stomach. >> reporter: a gunman was firing away as teachers went into lockdown and parents rushed to the scene. >> i heard screaming. and so we -- we went -- like we went to the wall and we sat down and then police came in. it's like is he in here? then he ran out. then our teacher -- then somebody yelled get to a safe place. >> inside, children were hiding as a gunman fired away. >> they were cryin in the closet. in the closet of the art room. and eventually, they were leaving and when they were leaving, the police made them hold hands. the police told them to close their eyes. >> told to keep their eyes c

the outer loop heading towards bethesda and connecticut avenue. in fact, let's just go to our live picture right now on our mdot camera so i can show you what's going o. i was just on the phone with maryland state police. on the outer loop after connecticut avenue, six cars were involved in this accident on the outer loop of the beltway causing major delays. you need to stay to the right to get by and if you're planning to head here, the equipment still on the scene. arrow board has been set up. a tight squeeze to the right. you know what that does to traffic. in fact, let's go to our next camera shot. i can show you the delays on the traffic land cam camera if we can go to that you have delays from at least georgia avenue as you head westbound on the beltway toward connecticut avenue. and that's growing quickly. jammed there on the beltway north of town. so keep that in mind for your travel plans. on the northbound side of i-95, you have delays coming up towards spring field. that's because of an earlier accident. a little further south from this in lorton that was in the hov lane

brought more details about friday's shooting in connecticut and the lives that were lost. and we should let you know, those details are troubling. the medical examiner has now identified all the victims killed yesterday at sandy hook elementary school. 20 children ages 6 and 7 died along with 6 adults. all were shot multiple times at close range with an assault rifle, not handguns as reported yesterday. investigators also say the shooter forced his way into the school although they have not given specifics as to how. and about two hours ago, president obama announced he will attend a memorial service tomorrow in newtown. tonight the mourning is well under way. in the past two hours this vigil was held for victoria soto, the first grade teacher shot while trying to shield her first grade students from the gunman. her family says she lost her life doing what she loved. she was 27 years old. a live report from sandy hook in a moment but first, cbs 5 reporter don knapp is at a vigil in san francisco's dolores park. don. >> reporter: ann, even though we are a continent away from what happene

newtown, connecticut. the president, congress and we the people all want to do something constructive to make sure this horror doesn't happen again. the problem, it will happen again no matter what we do. that doesn't mean we should do nothing. however, before acting, let's take a look at the facts. mass shootings in the usa are on the decline. according to criminologist from the minute money department of corrections, mass murder in america was most severe in 1929. in recent years, there were 32 mass killings in the 1980s, 42 in 9 '90s and 26s in the first decade of this century. according to the department of justice, murders of school age children have declined by 42% in the past 15 years. the latest stats show 1% of the murdered kids died at school. now, that's not to diminish the horrible crimes we have seen in connecticut and other places recently. all americans should understand that violence like that harms america's image throughout the world and we do have a gun culture here. no question about it. if the feds can tighten up gun laws without violating constitutional rights, t
